Design Response

Waratah Garden Room involves the renovation to an existing 1960's home in Waratah, NSW. The design for this project aims to create an intimate linkage between the interior of the home and thee exterior qualities of the site.

The renovation sees the removal of an internal wall to create a open plan kitchen/dining/seating area, generously opening out onto a deck with planted edge. The 'garden room' is deliberately set down from the main living area to invite one out to the garden below and create a multi-use space for a plethora of activities including yoga, guest room, children's play area or simply a place to sit and dwell.

The design is intended to sit 'at one' with the existing home and site, providing maximum impact with minimum intervention.

Timber features throughout the design, from the doors and windows to the joinery and garden room ceiling, creating a sense of warmth and connection to nature. Interior details including the overhead open shelving and terrazzo benchtop to the kitchen are intended as a playful nod to the 1960's characteristics of the home.
